Find Who

Find Who: A Gender-Inclusive Children’s Card Game

I designed Find Who as a classroom activity for children aged 3–7, with the goal of challenging traditional gender stereotypes through play. Research showed that parents were less comfortable with boys engaging in “feminine” toys than with girls engaging in “masculine” ones, highlighting persistent bias around femininity. By situating the game in a neutral setting like the classroom, the activity creates space for children to explore identities free from external influence.

The game consists of character cards and problem cards. Each character card describes three traits about a person, while problem cards present everyday scenarios. Children take turns matching their character cards to the problem scenarios, by focusing not on appearance or gender, but on skills and personality described on the cards. The first player to make three matches wins.

The character set was designed with care to disrupt gender norms: girls interested in science and cars, boys who bake or dance, as well as characters of diverse ethnicities and non-binary representation through neutral names, clothing, and haircuts. Blank cards allow children to illustrate and describe themselves, bringing personal identity into the game in a playful, authentic way.

At its core, Find Who helps children build empathy, celebrate difference, and see that masculinity and femininity can coexist without limits or judgment.
